Rubén Grilo - Here, There, Backward, Forward, Mirror, Hole, Through, Against
-
Featuring The Abstract Rug by Maria Loboda
There is a scene in Jean Cocteau's Orphée (1950) where Jean Marais wears rubber gloves in order to dive his hands into a mercury tank, simulating he is crossing through a mirror into the underworld. What had originally been a necessity for safety reasons was finally included as part of the script. In both reality and fiction simultaneously, the gloves become the only way to penetrate beyond his own reflection. The connections that this image suggest are explored in Rubén Grilo's exhibition through a wide range of works facing unsettled relations between the imaginary and the physical dimensions of images. These works become colliding elements of a puzzle, organised around a list of keywords.
The work of Rubén Grilo (Lugo, 1981) glides over the processes of interpretation and meaning using equally conceptual and narrative strategies to present sense displacements and dilemmas to the viewer. Through different media, his work plays with the value of the object, and the performativity and stories linked to them.
Parallel to the exhibition, a publication will be launched produced by the gallery.
